Morphogenetical Survey and Distribution of the Fv4r Gene in Korean Wild Mice

B.F.Klapp

Abstract
It has been well established that wild mice from world wide habitats show an extraordinary extension of genetic polymorphisms known in laboratory strains. They are actually quite useful not only for surveying valuable phenotypes in biomedical research, but for mapping new genes in mating experiments using an increasing number of marker loci. The natural population of wild mouse is useful for the development of new laboratory strains in the field of genetics. As a first step toward this goal, morphogenetical survey and distribution of the Fv4^r gene was carried out Korean wild mice. The coat color of Korean wild mice showed white belly in ventrum and typical agouti in dorsum. Thus, we presumed that genotypes for coat color of Korean wild mice is A A^wA^w/BB/CC. In order to determine the morphogenetical profiles of the wild mice and C57BL/6J and to identify these strains, discriminant analysis was carried out using the length of tail, body, head, hind foot and ear and body weight. Discriminant analysis showed the probability of erroneous discrimination to be 0%, 0%, 7.1% and 25% for the C57BI/6J, Hoengsong, Chunchon and Sokcho, respectively. Tail ratio is significantly different(p$lt;0.05) among Hoengsong, Chunchon and Sokcho mice by student¢¥s t-test.
Since some endogenous marine leukemia virus(MuLVs) are subspecies-specific genetic marker, the relatively recent migration of wild mice was detectable by analysis of endogenous MuLVs in the Asia. We surveyed distribution of a truncated endogenous MuLV which functions as a host¢¥s resistance gene(The Fv4^r gene) in Korean wild mice. Korean wild mice used in this study do not have Fv4^r and Fv4^r related genes. This results suggested that Hoengsong, Chunchon and Sokcho mice migrated from M. m. musculus which do not have the Fv4^r and Fv4^r related genes.
